Saturday, May 28 (Day 2)

Today the plan was to get up for 9 a.m. so we could go to the office to check in, since we got here so late last night. I woke up multiple times during the night, & I’m a morning person, so I figured we’d be set for our plan. 10:45 rolled around, & I finally dragged myself out of bed to shake the sleeping beauty in the other room. We stopped in the main office to check in & sign up for the grocery store shuttle, then walked across the street to Coconut Joe’s for breakfast, which is delicious- we stopped here last night on our very extensive “exploring” trip: walking across the street to Coconut Joe’s-and then back to our condo. This morning there were chickens running around our feet everywhere! The seating is all outdoors, & there’s a giant tree growing right out of the deck, which I think is super cool.

After breakfast, we decided to do some actual exploring & walked down the street a bit….not without getting honked at, of course. Guess the Caribbean isn’t as different as the US as I thought. I tried to take pictures on our journey, only to discover I left the memory card at home- my camera holds a grand total of 6 pictures without it. Annie got so excited every time we saw something American (“Oh my god, THEY HAVE A KFC!”), and is dying to go to the Irish pub here. We walked until we found a grocery store, and decided to do some grocery shopping now & the rest later. Thankfully, I had a beach bag as big as the moon with me (Thank you Michaella & Arianna, it’s been more useful than you know!). We got a few things, then walked back. We also stopped at "Big Daddy's" liquor store- they don't have Mike's Hard Lemonade here, so sad, so we got pina colada mix instead. Crossing the street is always an adventure- did I mention they drive on the opposite ride of the road here? We aren’t always sure which way to look.

We unpacked as soon as we got back, and Annie called her mom. A segment of the conversation went a little like this:

Annie: “Mom we went grocery shopping & they even have things like carrots and Fruity Pebbles!”
Me: “…it’s a grocery store”
Annie: “Yeah but they don’t have things like that in places like Haiti & stuff”

We then decided to take the 30-second (literally) walk to the beach. The water is gorgeous. (Annie, walking into the ocean: “Is this saltwater?”) We stayed for a short time because we needed to catch the grocery shuttle….but not before I made us pina coladas. We were then to a different grocery store in the complete opposite direction- probably closer too. This was an interesting experience for us too:

Me: "Annie, do you want white or brown eggs?"
Random black man walking by: [smiling] "They say that brown is always better" [winks]

It’s a damn good thing we brought our backpacks & the beach bag, because they charge you for plastic bags at this store, so weird. Anyways, we are now set for this week (and probably for weeks after) with all the food we bought.

After arriving back at the condo & putting away the groceries, I decided to unpack my clothes and organize everything because I secretly have OCD (the clutter was stressing me out). Then we decided to cook dinner…meaning I cooked while Annie cut the tomatoes. We had steak, salad, & corn on the cob…we did a good job. We cleaned & Annie washed the pans for me :) (I cook, she cleans- it works PERFECTLY). Tonight, we plan on RAGING: Jacuzzi by the pool & a movie in our PJ’s. Kerilyn gets here tomorrow- we are very excited!
